Definition & Types of Banner

Banner Design refers to the graphic designing of a banner advertisement. The banner advertisement is a graphical web-advertising unit and on clicking this advertisement, a visitor goes to the advertiser’s website.
The word ‘banner’ has been derived from Latin word ‘bandum’ that means a cloth out which a flag is made. In general terms, banner refers to a piece of cloth that bears a logo, slogan or any other message. An advertiser uses banners for communicating a commercial or non-commercial message.

Types of Banner Design

There are different types of banner designs to create advertisements for a web page. There are various shapes and sizes of a banner. The standard size of banner is 468 pixels in breadth and 60 pixels in length. A pixel refers to the smallest unit of color used to make up images on a computer or a television screen. A banner does not have a universal file-size constraint. The shapes and sizes can vary from one advertisement to another. However, many websites impose their own limits on memory size as banners increase the total file size of the page on which they appear. This also increases the time taken by a browser to load the web page. The banner design are mainly in Joint Photographic Experts Group Format or Graphics Interchange Format.
